Have a Conversation with the Student
The teacher should ask the student to talk about their work. Teachers should not make an accusation to the student. The teacher should engage in a conversation about the student’s process of writing the paper and the teacher’s concerns about potential unauthorized use of AI.
-
Ask the student to share with you how they completed their assignment.
-
Check for student understanding. Ask the student to retell the main ideas and arguments of their submission in their own words.
-
Share with the student the indicators identified that unauthorized AI use may have been used
-
Make sure the student understands the allowable AI use for the assignment
-
Look at google doc editing history together if relevant.
-
Determine the next step
Option 1: Grade the Assignment
If the student adequately addressed your concerns during your conversation with them, then grade the assignment as is.
Option 2: Disciplinary and Restorative Measures (If the Student and Teacher Agree on Unauthorized AI Use)
Options for teacher response in line with SSSD Handbook for Student Management
-
Allow student to re-do assignment for full credit as a learning opportunity
-
Allow student to re-do assignment for partial credit as a learning opportunity
-
Zero on assignment
The teacher or student may request a Restorative Mediation by a counselor or administrator to support the student/teacher relationship.
Option 3: Seek Administrative Support (Teacher and Student Disagree)
The teacher should bring the situation to the student’s Assistant Principal along with all of the evidence gathered. The Assistant Principal and the rest of the admin team will review the evidence and talk with the teacher and the student to determine next steps.
